Black Mages 5

"I loved it."

submission: Black Mages 5
date: October 26, 2005

I loved it, right from the start it was great and there was never a dull moment, the movie was consistently great throughout and you were so close to getting a 10 for style(I use the style score for how much I like the movie out of 10). It was great to see that this wasn't yet another remake of the 2nd episode as I was kind of dreading that it would be. Once again I liked how you made them take damage from even the slightest touch as it wasn't something you'd normally expect which made it both good and funny. You made that factor of it even better this time by adding in how much gil was stolen, what item was stolen and what item was used, it was even better to see that done as well, and it just brought more humour and enjoyment to the whole thing. I loved how you had pretty much the whole thing in a very cutesy style and I loved how you had the thief disguised as a black mage at the start. Some of the events in it were completely random and stupid but this time you managed to do it in a way that was actually good, so well done for that. I loved the fight sequences in this as well, okay they weren't exactly action-packed, but that didn't matter, it was the style that they were done in that counted, it was just kinda cutesy and it worked really well and at times they were fairly random, but in a good way.

There was a bit of a sound problem at one point, when you swapped to scrolling up the mountains and eventually to space, just as the change to the mountains was madet he sound suddenly stopped and restarted, perhaps you should sort that out and then update it, although don't submit an entirely new episode with that one change made ;p

Anyway, well done, brilliant job, keep up the great work.

Author's Response:

The sound problem was due to scenes changing, I tried to fix it and succeeded in other parts of the movie, but because it was so big, Flash started doing strange things. Like crashing when I tried to export it.

But anyhow, thanks for the review.

"*Sighs* Not this again."

I was disappointed to see this once again, it was just a copy of Black Mages 2: SE, which was a copy of Black Mages 2, but just with some slight changes made to it, I don't really feel that there were enough changes made to it in order for a re-submit. The only difference here from Black Mages 2: SE was more fitting music, better graphics, an extra joke or two and some scenes done ever so slightly differently, it's really disappointing how 3 of the 5 episodes I've seen in this series so far have been basically the exact same movie. Again you needed to use different shots, as the consistent use of medium-long shots didn't let you get involved with action enough and it was absolutely vital at times that you showed things from further out. The humour in this one was still poor as the only good humour was the same jokes that were in the original second episode, the rest was just far too over the top and it got a bit stupid to be honest and I just didn't find it funny at all, the humour was just far too over the top and it just got really stupid to be honest. It would have been much better if instead of recycling a previous movie of yours for the second time you'd made something different, I'm just hoping that the 5th episode isn't this one all over again.

Black Mages 3

"That was good."

submission: Black Mages 3
date: October 26, 2005

That was good, I'm pleased to see that you steered away from the over the top randomness of the last one and as a result this one was much better, in fact in my opinion it's the best in the series so far. The very start of this wasn't particularly good, but once they all got captured from then on there was never a dull moment and it was just consistently good throughout. The good sense of humour was back which was definitely nice to see as it would have been terrible if you'd continued on with the humour that was there in the last two. Again I liked how you had them taking damage even from the slightest of touches, normally you wouldn't expect it to happen which is why it was good and also funny. The sword fight at the end was good as well, I liked how you had the swords breaking as the fight went on and the whole thing was just nicely done and was pretty interesting to watch. You still needed to show the action from further out at times though as the consistent use of medium-long shots didn't let you get involved with the action enough, yes you used extreme-closeups as well and you used them at the right times, but most of the movie used the same shot type, you needed to bring in long shots as well as there were times when you needed to see more of the action that was taking place which required a long shot. Despite the fact that I preferred this to the first I'm still somewhat disappointed to see that you've decided to take the humour road instead of the story one, as I was looking forward to a good, interesting story with this series, but oh well, I'm liking the humour anyway, so well done, good job, keep up the good work.

"Too over the top."

submission: Black Mages 2: SE

Okay it was an improvement on the original episode 2, the starting sequence, which was basically an exact copy from episode 2 just with the thief in it as well, was so much better than before, it's amazing what a little bit of music can do, you picked the wrong piece of music though, it didn't seem to fit in all that well with the action that was taking place, I'm sure you could have found a better fitting piece. Again I liked how they took damage from even the slightest touch, as it wasn't expected and it made it funny. The humour in this one again was poor, the only good humour was the same jokes that were in the original second episode, the rest was just far too over the top and it got a bit stupid to be honest and i just didn't find it funny at all. Again just like with the original episode 2 you also needed to show the action from further away at times, as it didn't look too good that you were right up close to them the whole way through as it didn't let you get involved with the action. Instead of just extending the second episode with more completely random over the top events you should have actually revealed the background story, as again this just seemed to be a pointless episode within the series as it didn't offer anything towards it.

"Hmm, really disappointing."

submission: Black Mages 2

After having just watched the first, I have to say this was really dissappointing, it didn't seem to continue on too much with the story in the first one, okay yeah the same plot was there, but this seemed more like an individual movie than part of a series. You needed to make this longer and have more eventful, interesting stuff taking place as to be honest this was just really boring. You needed to have some music as well as the sound effects as there was nothing to create any sort of atmosphere and it's the music that normally pulls you into a movie, this having none meant that there was nothing to pull you into it, which made it seem even worse than it actually was. Again I liked how they took damage from even the slightest touch, as it wasn't expected and it made it funny. The humour in this one seemed fairly poor, there were some good jokes amongst it and I laughed when the fighter pulled out the massive sword, but most of the jokes weren't really very interesting and they just weren't at all funny. You also needed to show the action from furthe away at times, as it didn't look too good that you were right up in their faces the whole way through and it didn't let you get involved with the action. This episode should have been revealing all the background story, but instead it was just a pointless, eventless, short sequence that offered nothing to the series.

"That was pretty good."

submission: Black Mages

Well that was pretty good, it was fairly entertaining throughout and there was never really a dull moment in it. I liked how you had the numbers coming up showing how much damage they'd taken, even when it was only for a small thing such as when two of the characters fell over, you didn't have to do it and most people wouldn't have done, which is why it was good and it was pretty funny to see. The story was pretty good, although perhaps it would have been nice if you'd had some background story in it as well, explaining why the Black Mages were attacking and who the group fighting them were, but hopefully that will be explained in the next episode. The fights were fun to watch, which is hard to do with a sprite movie, it's very rarely that people make sprite fights that are consistently interesting. One question I have though, when the white mage brought the soldier back to life, why didn't she bring her dad back as well? Surely that would have been the first thing she'd done, it didn't really make sense. I don't really have any complaints about this other than the lack of background story, but then that's normally explained in the second episode of a series, so it's not really a complaint as such. Anyway, well done, good job, keep up the good work.

Star Wars Christmas Songs

"Funny but it needed more songs."

date: October 25, 2005

What you had was funny, I liked what i saw, but there was just one problem with it, there weren't very many songs and it just made the movie far too short, as only having three just wasn't enough. If you'd had had more songs it would have added more to it and the whole thing would just have been much better as they'd have been more to enjoy. My favourite song had to be the Darth Vader one and it was funny to see the Emperor in the background with a stormtrooper on his knee. The animation for Jabba the Hutt could have been better, as the moving limbs didn't look too good, as they just looked completely seperate from the body, which just didn't look right at all.

Tribute to shitty flash

"Is that it?"

date: October 25, 2005

The idea to this was nothing original it had been done loads of times before this, submit a crap flash and put some text in saying about how people submit crap to the portal. It wasn't done very interestingly, all you had was a head moving, some text and a white background. If you were going to do this, you should have made it more visually appealing, you should have had something in the background other than just having it white and you also should have had some sound effects or music, or maybe even both, as this just wasn't interesting at all. Nothing really happened either, you should have at least thrown something into it to make it worth watching.

"It needed more to it."

At first it seemed like it was going to be alright, the idea of sea animals in a mafia seemed like an interesting one and it could have had a good story to it, but the truth is that you just didn't do much to it and nothing really happened. It was basically a political compaign against ocean sewage dumpage but you just didn't do it evry interestingly, you should have shown more of the story as all you showed was just a few shots. If you'd had brought more story into it, it would have been much more interesting. You also should have found some sound that fitted in better with the movie as the one you chose didn't seem to fit all that well. You also needed to add some sound effects into it as you only used a sound effect once and the movie just seemed really odd without sound effects. The sound effect you did use though, was fairly poor, as it was supposed to be guns firing but it just sounded far too quiet, I know the setting was supposed to be underwater, but it still should have been louder.

Live and Let Dive 2

"Not that good."

date: October 25, 2005

I didn't like the 1st 3 lemmings deaths as each one was practically the same, it wasn't very interesting to start with and repeating it just made it even worse. OK on the 2nd and 3rd you had the lemmings do some gymnastics on top of the fan, but that still wasn't very interesting. I wasn't too keen on the dialogue from the lemmings before they killed themselves either, as it was just really random and it wasn't really that funny. I did like how all 3 of the judges gave the same score each time though.

I liked the next death, it was funny to see the lemming jump up to go through the fan and for it to end up missing and hitting the middle bit and then it was even better when it ended up getting sliced up anyway. I also liked how two of the judges finally gave different scores but how the other one still gave the same.

I also liked the next death, as the lemming had a sword driven through it instead of jumping through the fan and it was nice to see something different. I also liked how the lemming said that the gay judges head was going to explode and how the gay judge ended up being a different one from the one you thought it would be. I didn't like the farting lesbian penguins joke, it just really wasn't at all funny and to be honest it was rather childish and wasn't at all necessary. Another part of this sequence that I did like though was how the judges used the score cards for the countdown, although it was a little out of time as the head blew up as the '1' card as being raised, really his head should have blown up as the '1' card had been fully risen, as it would have just looked much better if it had actually been in time.

I also enjoyed the next death with the lemming jumping to go through the fan but ending up getting caught on the intestines, it was also nice when the other lemming got dragged into the fan blades as a result. You could have done this better though, you should have had the lemming that got caught go through the fan as well and it should have dragged the intestines in with it and then the other lemming could have been dragged in, slicing up all its inner organs before slicing up what was left of its body. You should have had this sequence really gory as it would just have been much funnier. The dialogue between the judges should have been better too as it just wasn't very funny and to be honest it was kinda boring.

I didn't like the next death at all, as it was just really boring to watch a lemming with a sword through it's head standing there speaking gibberish before finally falling to the floor dead, perhaps you should have added something else to it to make it more interesting. Not much happened with the judges either, their sequence was too short and nothing particularly interesting was said.

I enjoyed the next death, I liked how the lemming threw the sword through the air then ran forward to try to get impaled by the sword. You made it look like the lemming was going to just stand there and have the sword go through it, which just made it even better when the lemming jumped up and went through the fan after having the sword go through it as well. I also enjoyed the judges part here, as it was funny how one of the judges didn't realise he was a penguin and you had some funny lines to go with it.

Overall it wasn't that good a movie, ok there were good parts in it, but the only problem was that there were boring parts to it as well, particularly at the start where you used practically the same thing 3 times in a row. Those poor aspects of the movie just really let it down. The sound was fairly poor at times, most of the time it was fine, but there were moments when it was poor and there appeared to be some sort of echo noise to some pieces and sometimes you could hear the static noise from when a sound clip begins and ends. There were also times when the animation could have been better as it didn't seem very fluid, these moments were when the lemming at the start was moving its hands and when the lemmings were doing their gymnastics on the mat.
